Michael Korn is the Music Director of the Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra and Sharon Community Chamber Orchestra. He has conducted numerous performances, including in some of the most prestigious concert halls of the nation such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and Symphony Hall in Boston. Hailed for his inventive approach to orchestral programming, Michael is the winner of The American Prize competition.
Balancing traditional jewels of orchestral music with less familiar compositions, Michael introduced audiences to works of Juan Arriaga, Norbert Burgmuller, Louise Farrenc, Sophie Gail, Marianna Martines, Etienne Mehul, Emilie Mayer,Robert Volkmann, Jan Vaclav Vorisek, Paul Wranitzky, and conducted the U.S. premiere of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony in a completed edition by German composer-scholar Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs. An avid advocate of American and contemporary music, Michael conducted works by Amy Beach, Howard Frazin, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, William Grant-Still, Howard Hanson, Florence Price, and Gwyneth Walker. A champion of adventurous repertoire, he brought to stage Ollantay by an Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera, Great Sandy Island by an Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe, Folk Symphony by a Nigerian composer Fela Sowande, Ling Nan Suite by a Chinese composer Ye Xiaogang as well as concertos for didgeridoo by an Australian composer Sean O'Boyle, and for duduk by an Armenian composer Henrik Anassian.
Michael's most recent performances featured the world premiere of "Butcha" Lamento for Orchestra in memory of victims of Butcha by Russian composer Roman Stolyar, Symphony No. 2 by English composer Ruth Gipps (the East Coast premiere), violin concertos by Afro-Cuban violinist and composer Jose White Lafitte and by Swedish composer Amanda Rontgen-Maier, and a cello concerto "Standing Tall" by and American cellist and composer Emmanuel Feldman.
The upcoming performances include Erwin Schulhoff's Symphony No.5, Alan Hovhaness' Symphony No.22, and the U.S. premiere of Symphony No.2 by an Ukrainian composer Bohdana Frolyak.
A dedicated enthusiast of making music together, Michael has enjoyed collaborations with many renowned soloists, including Yelena Dudochkin (soprano), Victor Cayres (piano), Philip Lima (baritone), Zhantao Lin (erhu), Mark McEwen (oboe), Victor Romanul (violin), Linda Toote (flute), and Michael Zaretzky (viola), and with extraordinary young musicians such as Joe McDonald (violin), Hayden Idson (cello), Haig Hovsepian (violin), Hannah To (Chinese dulcimer), and Ariel Wang (flute, piano), to name a few.
